My first race this year is going to be the Early Bird triathlon here in Ottawa. The Early Bird tri is put on by Somersault Events and will be happening Saturday May 17. The Early Bird Tri is the perfect race to start off the season or as your very first race. I am actually trying to get my brother to sign up and compete in his very first triathlon.
If you’re from Ottawa you know it’s to cold to swim outside in May, so the swim is held in the Carleton University pool. This is great for a first triathlon because there is no mass start, you know there are lifeguards to save you and there is a nice line on the pool floor to help you stay on course. There are a couple of different distances, if you’re looking to do your first race there is the Try A Tri (100m swim, 10.5km bike, 2.2km run). If you want something longer there is the Long Tri (500m swim, 30.5km bike, 5km run). There are also the Sprint Tri (500m swim, 20.5km bike, 5km run) and the Super Sprint Tri (100m swim, 10.5km bike, 5km run) if you want something in-between. I am signed up for the Long Tri, it will be a great warm up for the rest of the season.
So far this year I am planning for signed up for the Ottawa Early Bird Triathlon, Ironman Mont-Tremblant 70.3, the Peterborough Triathlon, the National Capital Triathlon and Ironman Muskoka 70.3. There will also be some just plain running races and a few charity rides thrown in there for fun. It’s going to be a busy season!
