My Triathlon Gear

One thing that I love about triathlon is all of cool gadgets and upgrades you can get. For me, upgrading and getting new gear has become a bit of an obsession. I now get emails from some of my favourite companies when they have deals going on. I am always on the hunt for a good deal on some cool triathlon gear.

All the gear that you really need to complete a triathlon is a swim suit, swim goggles, a bike, running shoes and shorts and a t-shirt. If you’ve never done a triathlon before, this is important to remember. It’s easy to drop a ton of cash on a bunch of cool stuff but you don’t really need it until you become really competitive or start doing longer races. I always try to remind myself that it doesn’t matter how fast your bike might be if the engine powering it isn’t in tip top shape.

My strongest discipline is the bike and I have spent the most money on my cycling gear. I currently have two bikes that I use. One is a road bike that I use mostly for training rides and when I do a bike tour. This year I also got a time trial or TT bike, which someday, I’d like upgrade to an even better TT bike.

My road bike is a Giant Defy 1. My Giant has the Shimano 105 10 speed drive train, the fork and seat post are carbon fiber, the frame is aluminum, I have Shimano 105 pedals and have upgraded to a Mavic Ksyrium Elite S wheel set to.

My TT bike is a Ridley Cheetah. It has a Shimano Ultegra drive train, Dura Ace shifters, TRP carbon brake set, Profile Design carbon cockpit, aluminum frame, carbon fork and seat post and I just switch my pedals and wheels between bikes, for now.

My equipment for the run and swim is much simpler. The shoes that I use are Adidas Marathon 10s and I really like Nike running shorts. Swimming I keep it pretty simple as well, when doing laps I wear a pair of Adidas compression shorts and use Aqua-Sphere Kaiman goggles.

I have a bunch of other gear that I love and helps me train. One of the most useful things that I have is my Kinetic Road Machine bike trainer. This amazing piece of equipment lets me set up one of my bikes as a stationary bike. Living in Canada, it’s great to be able to keep biking through the winter in a nice warm room. I also love my waterproof Ipod Shuffle from Underwater Audio. Having a waterproof Ipod keeps me sane when I am doing long workouts in the pool. I also I don’t have to worry about my sweat or rain ruining my Ipod when out for a run. When I am racing a wear a Pearl Izumi Octane Tri Suit which I got from a friend, this suit helps me keep my transition times down because I don’t have to change clothes. I also have some other gear that’s important like my awesome Oakley Half Jacket 2.0 sunglasses, my running hat, some cool socks and cycling shoes.

The one piece of equipment I couldn’t live without is my Garmin Forerunner 305. This watch tells me my heart rate, tracks my speed, distance and a number of other stats. Looking at all of the data it provides me lets me see how I am doing during the race and how I am improving while training.

There is still a lot that I would love to get. The next thing I really need is a wetsuit because the water in Mont Tremblant is pretty cool in the spring when I’ll be competing in the Ironman 70.3 there. What’s your favourite piece of triathlon gear? Anything you want to get?
